Help us wish Laurel a happy birthday!🎉
A proud NOCO native, Laurel is the editor of NOCO Style and the creative force behind many of the stories you read each month. She works to find, assign and often writes the features that bring our community to life.
When she’s not piecing together articles, you’ll find her camping and fishing in the mountains, tending to her plants or soaking up live music on a sunny patio.
Cheers to you, Laurel!

Did You Know, National Heritage Area Edition....
➡️ National Heritage Areas are designated by Congress. Through public-private partnerships, NHA entities support historic preservation, natural resource conservation, recreation, heritage tourism, and educational projects. The Cache NHA spans 45 miles of the working Poudre River, spanning two counties, from Bellvue to the confluence of the South Platte in Greeley.
➡️ NHAs are not National Parks. Rather, NHAs are partners of the U.S. National Park Service. @nationalparkservice provides technical assistance and distributes matching federal funds from Congress. Unlike its close neighbor, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Cache NHA does not own or manage land within the heritage area.
➡️ In 1874, the conflict over water availability in the Poudre River Valley erupted. The disagreement between Union Colony (now Greeley) and Agricultural Colony (now Fort Collins) shaped water use across many western states. Learn about the conflict in stories.
📸[1971.20.0004] @cityofgreeley Museums; Looking east towards Greeley’s Main St (8th St) with #3 ditch visible on left.
➡️ Cache la Poudre is French for “Hide the Powder.” The most accepted story of the name comes from a group of fur trappers who were stranded in a snowstorm near the banks of the river. They stashed their supplies, including gun powder, so they could travel on to Green River, WY.
Let us know in the comments what surprised you most about NHAs!
