Stories from 42 years of restaurant ownership and the transformation of Old Town Fort Collins
For more than four decades, John Arnolfo had a front-row seat to the people, conversations and changes that shaped downtown Fort Collins. Now, the former owner of iconic Silver Grill Cafe is sharing those experiences in his new memoir, “The Silver Grill Cafe: An American Story and Counter Seat to Fort Collins History, a Memoir of Family and Community.”
“The Silver Grill was always about so much more than serving breakfast,” Arnolfo says. “It was about the people who walked through our doors and the employees and community that supported us through the years. I wanted to preserve those stories and share what I learned along the way. My hope is that readers will recognize a little of their own Fort Collins history in these pages.”
Arnolfo owned the Silver Grill Cafe from 1979 to 2021, guiding the restaurant through decades of growth while helping to champion the revitalization of Old Town Fort Collins. Along the way, he witnessed the evolution of downtown, built relationships with generations of customers and employees and learned lessons about business, leadership and community that continue to shape his life today.
His memoir takes readers behind the counter of one of Fort Collins’ most recognizable restaurants, sharing personal stories about family, the challenges of running a business, the people who influenced his journey and the collective effort to build a thriving downtown.
More than a restaurant
When Arnolfo became the owner of the Silver Grill Cafe in 1979, Old Town Fort Collins was a very different place. Over the next four decades, he experienced firsthand the challenges and opportunities that came with operating a growing restaurant while contributing to efforts to strengthen and revitalize downtown. Through his memoir, Arnolfo reflects on those years with a combination of humor, personal insight and appreciation for the people who helped make the Silver Grill and Fort Collins what they are today.
For longtime residents, the book offers a nostalgic look at familiar places, personalities and moments in local history. For entrepreneurs and business owners, it shares lessons learned through decades of hard work, changing times and the importance of building lasting relationships.
