Nepali Jatra invites the community to a free screening of “Festivals,” featuring Saraswati Puja and Tihar, followed by a Q&A with Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jaswant Dev Shrestha. Optional donations will support disaster relief in Nepal.
On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Nepali Jatra will host a free screening of “Festivals,” a documentary series exploring Nepal’s rich cultural traditions, at the Longmont Museum. The screening will feature episodes on Saraswati Puja, the festival honoring knowledge, learning and the arts, and Tihar, Nepal’s Festival of Lights, known for its traditions honoring animals, family and the bond between brothers and sisters.
The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Jaswant Dev Shrestha, an Emmy Award-winning Nepali filmmaker. The program offers community members an opportunity to learn about Nepal’s cultural heritage, the meaning behind its festivals and the stories that connect generations.
The screening comes at a difficult time for Nepal. The country has faced repeated landslides and flooding over the past two months, with communities experiencing loss, displacement and damage to homes and infrastructure. As families continue to cope with the consequences of these disasters, Nepali Jatra hopes to bring people together through cultural understanding while offering a meaningful way to support those affected.
“Through this screening, we want people to learn about Nepal beyond the headlines and understand the traditions, values and stories that shape our communities. Nepal is facing another difficult period following repeated landslides and floods. We hope this gathering will help people connect with Nepal’s culture and, for those who wish, provide an opportunity to support families affected by these disasters,” says Sunanda Dangol, founder of Nepali Jatra.
The event will also serve as Nepali Jatra’s first fundraiser for people affected by floods and landslides in Nepal. Attendance is free, and donations are entirely optional. No contribution is required to attend the screening.
One hundred percent of funds raised through the event will go to Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund through the Longmont Community Foundation. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Community members, families, students, educators and anyone interested in learning about Nepal are welcome to attend.
