City of Greeley Celebrates Historic Preservation Month in May

By: Staff

The City of Greeley is celebrating Historic Preservation Month by recognizing the people and projects helping preserve the community’s history.

The Historic Preservation Office invites the Greeley community to join free events throughout May, including a history presentation, a public proclamation and an awards ceremony honoring local preservation projects.

“Celebrating historic preservation reminds the community that protecting historic places also means preserving the stories and identity that connect generations,” says Betsy Kellums, historic preservation office planner.

Historic Preservation Month proclamation

Mayor Hall will announce May as Historic Preservation Month in Greeley at the May 19 City Council meeting. Community members are encouraged to attend or access it online at greeleygov.com.

Historic preservation celebration and awards ceremony

The Historic Preservation Commission recognizes the people and projects helping preserve Greeley’s historic places at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at the Greeley Creative Arts Center, located at 702 13th St. Attendees can check out award winners, hear from historic preservation leaders and watch short films about Greeley’s historic places.

History Hour at the Greeley History Museum

Community members are invited to learn what Greeley was like 150 years ago with Dr. Chris Bowles, museum manager. Bowles will share stories and details about daily life in 1876, the same year Colorado became a state and the United States turned 100.

History Hour will introduce the new exhibit, “Home News: A Greeley View of the Centennial.” The program draws from Bowles’ research into every 1876 issue of the Greeley Tribune, highlighting the Greeley community in a pivotal year in American history. A guided tour of the exhibit will follow the talk.

Windows of Time on GTV8

During May, Historic Preservation Month videos airing on GTV8 highlight significant moments from Greeley’s history. The Windows of Time videos are also available on the City of Greeley’s YouTube channel.

All Historic Preservation Month events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Betsy Kellums at hpo@greeleygov.com or 970.350.9222.
