First Native-American U.S. Poet Laureate Coming to UNC Campus

In June, Joy Harjo, a prominent poet, author, musician, and member of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation, was appointed as the new U.S. Poet Laureate. After receiving the award, Joy Harjo remarked, “This kind of award honors the place of Native people in this country, the place of Native people’s poetry.”

On September 11, Native American Student Services, at the University of Northern Colorado, has the honor and privilege of hosting the distinguished Joy Harjo for a luncheon and lecture. The event will take place in the Campus Commons Multi-Purpose Room with doors opening at 11:00 am and the lecture beginning at 11:30 am.

Throughout the lecture, guests will have the opportunity to hear Joy Harjo discuss her experiences as an essential figure in Native American Literature and as the newly appointed U.S. Poet Laureate. Along with the lecture, guests can enjoy an Indian taco buffet provided by UNC Catering.

Additionally, Joy Harjo will be participating in a Q&A with guests and a book signing. If you are interested in attending this once-in-a-lifetime event, please RSVP here.
