From Oct. 20-Nov. 2, 2024, the community is invited to take part in the Day of the Dead Memorial in downtown Loveland at Foundry Plaza. This memorial offers a meaningful way to remember and honor loved ones who have passed.
The event will feature a large altar (ofrenda), where participants can place personal mementos, photos and symbolic items in memory of their departed loved ones. Additionally, an altar inside the former Betta Gumbo space will provide educational displays on the cultural and spiritual significance of the items placed, offering insight into the symbolism behind this tradition. Whether adding a simple candle or a personal item, everyone is encouraged to participate in this collective tribute for the departed.
As part of the memorial, Windows Alive will be creating a sugar skull and Day of the Dead-themed mural on the outside of the Betta Gumbo windows. Participants are encouraged to write notes to their loved ones on colorful sticky notes, which will color the inside of the sugar skull mural, adding a personal touch to the display.
From 12-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, the Loveland Downtown District is organizing the Pumpkin Festival, where families are invited to visit the Heart and Sol tent to participate in a community art project that will be included in the installation. Attendees can craft marigolds out of paper, which will be collectively placed in the community memorial.
To wrap things up, on Nov. 2, Heart and Sol will host the Día de Los Muertos Celebration from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Loveland Museum. The event will feature live music, food and crafts, offering fun and cultural engagement for all ages. That evening, there will be a candle-lit gathering to conclude the memorial, providing a final moment of reflection.
This community memorial is presented by the Loveland Downtown District, Heart and Sol, and Jules Gillen Healing Arts. For more information, contact Nicole Fellure at 970.219.9844 or nfellure@lovelandpartnership.org.
