Fifty-five years ago, on April 1, 1970, a small team of volunteers delivered warm meals and even warmer compassion to 24 residents of Greeley. It marked the beginning of a local movement—one plate at a time—that has since nourished thousands across Greeley and outlying Weld County. Today, Meals on Wheels of Greeley and Weld County proudly celebrates its 55th anniversary, honoring its legacy while inviting the community to shape the next chapter.
Founded under the visionary leadership of Mary Margaret Cox, who served nearly 48 years as the nonprofit’s executive director, the organization has grown from serving a few dozen to delivering hundreds of meals daily, thanks to the help of dedicated volunteers. Now under the leadership of Michelle Dwyer, Meals on Wheels of Greeley and Weld County continues to serve older adults and those unable to prepare meals for themselves with a mission grounded in nutrition, social connection and compassionate care.
“For 55 years, Meals on Wheels of Greeley and Weld County has been powered by kindness—by volunteers, donors and neighbors who believe in caring for one another,” says Michelle Dwyer, executive director. “Our story isn’t over; it’s just growing stronger. We invite everyone to help us deliver the next chapter together.”
As part of the 55th anniversary, Meals on Wheels is not only reflecting on its past but also engaging the community in new ways, including these upcoming initiatives and community opportunities:
Cartober – Throughout the month of October
In October, the national Cartober campaign gives supporters the opportunity to donate their old car, truck, RV, motorcycle or boat. Vehicle donations directly fuel the mission of Meals on Wheels, transforming once-used items into funding that sustains meal deliveries and care.
Subaru Share the Love – Begins in November
Nearly 5 million meals have been donated and delivered nationwide through Subaru’s Share the Love® campaign. Customers purchasing a new Subaru can designate a portion of the sale to Meals on Wheels. As the largest automotive donor to Meals on Wheels America, Subaru continues to drive change one meal at a time.
A call to remember and recommit
With roots deep in Greeley and branches reaching across Weld County, including a satellite location in Firestone, Meals on Wheels is more than a nonprofit. It’s a neighbor, a lifeline and a celebration of community. As the organization reflects on its humble beginnings and the thousands of lives touched over five decades, it asks the community: “Will you be part of the next 55 years?”
Consider volunteering, donating a vehicle, sharing a story or signing up for updates. Every action fuels the mission of dignity, independence and care for those who need it most. Learn more and get involved at mealsonwheelsgreeley.com.
