Museum of Art Fort Collins Opens Two New Exhibitions for Fall

By: Staff

The Museum of Art Fort Collins will host two new exhibitions at the opening reception, which will take place from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2. All exhibitions run through Jan. 4, 2026.

Exhibition number one: Indigenous Voices

The museum will feature Indigenous Voices: A Contemporary Art Exhibition in the main gallery. Indigenous Voices features the work of nine artists: Kristina Badhand, Gregg Deal, Sage Deal, Diego Florez-Arroyo, Chelsea Kaiah, Skye Little Cloud, Rafael Maldonado, Alicia Trujillo and Steven Yazzie. Indigenous Voices showcases local Colorado contemporary artists, their work and their voices, giving insight into the rich tapestry of ideas that comes through modern art by living artists that are also indigenous. Political, cultural, social and artistically driven, Indigenous Voices showcases artists that embody possibility through the art they create. The exhibition is curated by Gregg Deal of Denver.

“It cannot be understated that indigenous representation on our homelands is an incredibly powerful thing,” Deal says. “Western civilization has canonized indigenous existence to the relic of the past when we still exist here today. While often relegated to a relic image, the power of a Native artist is in representing ourselves with the power of art. Artists are often considered to be medicine people in most of our communities, and therefore important people carrying something forward that is important. Our identity is nuanced and wholeheartedly our own, giving us the experience of being both indigenous and American, carrying our voices through contemporary art.”

Exhibition number two: “Fulcrum”

The second exhibition will feature Timothy David Orme’s 2021 short film, “Fulcrum.” In “Fulcrum,” Orme, who is known for his experimental and cross-genre films and animations, opens up a space for quiet reflection and meditation. Through repetitious and seemingly endless labor—that of rowing—the “terrifying banality” of simply doing a job morphs into invocations of sinking, flying, revolving or flipping on one’s head.

Orme is a writer, filmmaker and animator. His short films and animations, spanning nearly every genre (experimental, narrative, music video and documentary), have been shown at film festivals and art venues all over the world. Orme’s film present in “Fulcrum” won best animation at the 2022 Dam Short Film Festival, 2022 Arizona International Film Festival and 2002 Liverpool Underground Film Festival. It was also a juried film at the 2022 Thomas Edison Film Festival, and it was featured on Short of the Week. Orme is currently an associate professor of animation and SFX at California State University Monterey Bay. Dinghy Rig is a collaborative, artist-run art production and exhibition program launched by Aitor Lajarin-Encina and Marius Lehene.

Support for these exhibitions comes from the City of Fort Collins Fort Fund, Colorado Creative Industries, National Endowment for the Arts, Local IQ, The Elizabeth Hotel and DaVinci Sign Systems, Inc.
