Details confirmed for the first four nights of the six-night series sponsored by Comcast
The Town of Wellington is excited to announce the introduction of a new Movie Night in the Parks series, which is set to kick off this summer at parks across town. The series consists of six evening movie screenings with family-friendly games set up for attendees to use before the movies start. Details for the first four nights are as follows:
- “Kung Fu Panda” — June 7 at Wellington Community Park (8760 Buffalo Creek Parkway); games at 7:30 p.m. and movie at 8:30 p.m.
- “Kicking and Screaming” — July 18 at Centennial Park (3815 Harrison Ave.); games at 7:30 p.m. and movie at 8:30 p.m.
- “Shrek” — Aug. 8 at Centennial Park (3815 Harrison Ave.); games at 7 p.m. and movie at 8 p.m.
- “Teenage Kraken” — Sept. 5 at Wellville Park (4200 Halleck Lane); games at 6:30 p.m. and movie at 7:30 p.m.
Details of the final two Movie Nights—one later in September and one in October—will be announced as soon as information is available.
The series is the result of a collaboration between the town’s Parks, Recreation, Open Spaces and Trails advisory board and its Parks & Recreation Department, which have been pursuing the idea of bringing a summer movie series back to Wellington for more than a year. The town last hosted movies in parks in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We saw this as a great opportunity to create a fun, family-friendly way for people to gather and connect in different parts of town,” says Emma Adams, Wellington’s recreation coordinator. “By rotating the movie locations throughout the summer, we’re hoping to reach all corners of town and make it more accessible for everyone.”
Attendees should plan on bringing their own chairs or blankets to sit on. They should also plan on leaving their pets at home, as animals are not allowed with the exception of service animals. In addition, typical parks rules and guidelines remain in effect.
The Movie Night in the Parks series ties in perfectly with Wellington’s Strategic Plan, specifically the goal to cultivate community spaces, according to Billy Cooksey, parks and recreation manager. The series was also scheduled in an effort to help bolster attendance at other town events—like the Main Street Markets scheduled for July 18 and Aug. 8 in Centennial Park—and draw people closer to Wellington businesses.
“Introducing this series means bringing back a place of gathering for our community, specifically one that is designed to support other town events as well as our small businesses,” Cooksey says. “We are excited for this to become a meaningful new tradition in Wellington.”
