The window unveiling will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 17, 2024
Julian’s, a cherished historic landmark in Fort Collins, invites the community to step into a holiday wonderland with the unveiling of its Holiday Christmas Town Window Display at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. Presented in partnership with Dr. Ed Siegel, the display is on loan from the collection of local artist Louise Cutler, whose attention to detail and artistic vision bring a unique and heartwarming village scene to life in the heart of Old Town.
Founded by Julian Siegel, Julian’s has been a cornerstone of Fort Collins since the early 20th century. Born in Poland in 1898, Siegel emigrated to the U.S. as a teenager, later moving to Fort Collins in the 1920s. His first shop, at 114 S. College Ave., introduced Fort Collins to modern amenities, including the town’s first fluorescent lights. Julian eventually expanded to 137 S. College Ave., where the shop still stands today, symbolizing his resilience and vision. Over the years, Julian’s has become renowned not only for its elegant fashions but also for Siegel’s deep dedication to the community.
As a community leader, Siegel founded and led local initiatives, from creating a new Boy Scout troop with teacher Jean Irish to chairing what is now United Way. A champion for inclusivity, he also persuaded Fort Collins restaurant owners to remove “White Trade Only” signs during WWII, making a significant stand for equality in the town.
The holiday display, carefully curated by Louise Cutler, is inspired by her childhood memories of Chicago’s iconic department store window displays, like those at Marshall Field’s and Carson Pirie Scott. Determined to bring that same sense of wonder to her own children, Louise began creating her own miniature holiday town. Over the years, what started as a modest collection blossomed into an entire Christmas village, infused with her unique artistic touches. As an artist, Louise hand-painted many of the town’s figures to represent a multicultural world, ensuring her Christmas town reflects the community she wishes to see.
Louise Cutler is an artist whose work is deeply influenced by her passion for cultural inclusivity and her extensive travels, which include visits to renowned cultural sites and museums worldwide. Her art has been exhibited in notable venues such as the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Museum of Outdoor Arts in Fort Collins. Inspired by her love of history and community, Louise brings the magic of the season to Fort Collins through this display, blending her personal experiences and artistic vision to create a holiday experience that is both nostalgic and inclusive.
The display will be available for viewing throughout the holiday season. For more information, contact Louise Cutler, artist and independent curator: lcutlerstudio@aol.com, louisecutlerstudio.com.
