The City of Fort Collins announced the upcoming construction of the Siphon Pedestrian Overpass, a transformative project that will connect Southeast Fort Collins to the city’s extensive trail network.
Construction is set to begin in December 2024, with completion expected by Summer 2025. The $4 million project will create a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks between Harmony Road and Trilby Road. Siphon Pedestrian Overpass will link the newly opened Mail Creek Trail, which runs from the intersection of Zepher and Tilden west under South Timberline Road before stopping at the site of this project, to the existing Power Trail, addressing a significant two-mile gap in connectivity.
“This project responds to strong demand from nearby neighborhoods, schools and businesses,” says Jin Wang, City of Fort Collins civil engineer. “It will provide a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists in an area that has long been disconnected from our trail system.”
Key Project Details
- Location: Between Harmony and Trilby roads, connecting the Mail Creek Trail to the Power Trail
- Construction timeline: Fall 2024 to Summer 2025
- Total cost: $4 million, funded through grants and city programs
Temporary Impacts
The project will have temporary impacts on the surrounding area, including:
- A closure of a section of the Power Trail with a designated detour
- Construction access through nearby neighborhoods, including Southridge Greens, Hansen Farms and The Reserve at Timberline
The city is actively communicating with impacted communities to minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth construction process.
“We thank everyone in communities near this project for their patience and collaboration with us as we work to complete the Siphon Pedestrian Overpass in a complex location surrounded by neighborhoods and split by the Union Pacific Railroad,” Wang says.
This project is part of Fort Collins’ ongoing commitment to enhancing its multi-modal transportation network. The Siphon Pedestrian Overpass will provide safer and more convenient access to schools, parks and the broader trail system for residents in Southeast Fort Collins.
