Nevermore: An Evening of Edgar Allen Poe

The first Readers’ Theatre production of the 32nd season, “Nevermore: An Evening of Edgar Allen Poe,” combines classic literature and suspense

Bas Bleu Theatre Company is excited to announce its production of “Nevermore: An Evening of Edgar Allen Poe.” Robyn Cuthbertson directs this piece, which takes viewers through one of Poe’s most famous poems and two of his short stories. Readers’ Theatre is the perfect venue for these chilling vignettes. The audience is encouraged to use their imagination as they listen to the plots unfolding. Radio drama and podcasts have found their theatrical cousin in the Readers’ Theatre format.

In Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, “The Raven,” a grieving man mourns the loss of his beloved Lenore. One night, he is visited by a mysterious raven that perches on a bust of Pallas Athena in his chamber. As the man converses with the bird, it repeatedly utters the word “nevermore,” driving him deeper into despair.

In the story of “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor, who seeks revenge against his acquaintance Fortunato, brings him into the catacombs of his family’s home under the pretense of tasting a rare wine, Amontillado. As they descend into the dark catacombs, Montresor plays on Fortunato’s pride and inebriation and brings him to meet a terrible fate. “The Fall of the House of Usher” introduces listeners to the narrator, who visits his childhood friend Roderick Usher. Roderick lives in a decaying mansion with his twin sister, Madeline, and is tormented by a mysterious illness and a deep sense of dread regarding his family’s legacy. This dramatized short story deals with mental health, family and isolation.
