Experience Oaxaca’s Celebration of Day of the Dead at Global Village Museum

The enchanting world of Day of the Dead comes alive as Street Vistas: Oaxaca’s Día de los Muertos debuts Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures. The museum is open with free admission from 5-8 p.m. for First Friday Art Walk, with a live performance by the Horizon Wind Ensemble.

“Step into the vibrant streets of Oaxaca, Mexico, and immerse yourself in the captivating world of Día de los Muertos,” says Kat Bertram, the museum’s volunteer and collections manager. “The exhibit will capture the essence of the Day of the Dead tradition through the lens of everyday life leading up to, and during, the grand celebration. You will be transported to the bustling streets of Oaxaca, where colorful papier-mâché skeletons and intricate street vignettes tell stories of family, remembrance and community.”

Different cultures around the world celebrate Day of the Dead differently. In the World Heritage site of Oaxaca, the streets feature the melding of many cultures. The well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture is juxtaposed with indigenous artistry that is reflective of the religious and family values of the Mexican people.

Enchanting scenes adorn the facades of shops, stores and restaurants, each decorated to honor the departed. These traditional folk art displays provide a glimpse into the heart of the celebration, where daily life and the spiritual world intertwine seamlessly. The museum’s exhibition will showcase a visual journey through the heart of Oaxaca, where the spirit of Día de los Muertos resonates with every brushstroke and detail. The exhibit runs through Nov. 23.

Performing from 5:30-7 p.m., the Horizon Wind Ensemble offers selections from classical to popular music. The musicians from Fort Collins, Greeley and Berthoud play various styles of music, while their arrangements bring the fun and enjoyment of live music to listeners.

The Global Village Museum is located at 200 W. Mountain Ave., and museum hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Regular admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, $1 for ages 4-15 and free for children 3 and under. Adult tours receive discounted admission of $3 per person.
