Fort Collins Connexion Aims to Bridge the Digital Divide with Digital Inclusion Program as National Program Concludes
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a federal internet subsidy program that began in 2021, expired at the end of April 2024. This program provided internet discounts of $30 per month to low-income households, and many Fort Collins residents could lose access to their current affordable broadband plans.
An affordable local alternative is available through Fort Collins Connexion, the city-owned fiber internet service provider. Since its inception in 2018, Connexion has been committed to ensuring reliable, high-speed internet is accessible to all residents, and that cost of service is not a barrier. Connexion’s Digital Inclusion Program offers qualified residents one Gigabit fiber internet for $20 per month. This program bridges the digital divide in the community by offering discounted high-speed internet to families who demonstrate financial need and is not impacted by any future changes to the federal ACP subsidy.
Through the Digital Inclusion Program, families get the tools they need to thrive in today’s digital world while being safeguarded from skyrocketing internet bills.
Key Features of the Fort Collins Connexion Digital Inclusion Program:
- 1 Gbps upload and download speeds
- Free Wi-Fi
- No data caps
- No contract required
- Up to 10 email accounts
Eligibility is aimed at Fort Collins residents meeting specific income requirements, including those below the federal poverty line or enrolled in programs like SNAP, Medicaid or the free and reduced lunch program.
“With the ACP ending, it’s vital to focus on local initiatives like our Digital Inclusion Program,” says Chad Crager, executive director of Fort Collins Connexion. “Quality internet access doesn’t just benefit Fort Collins residents; it enriches our entire community and extends its reach far beyond. We currently have over 700 customers participating in our Digital Inclusion Program, and we’d like to add many, many more in the coming years.”
