Acute Care Facility Provides Emergency Mental Health Care and Withdrawal Management in Southwest Fort Collins

Saturday marked the grand opening of the Acute Care facility at the new Longview Behavioral Health campus. Located at 2260 W. Trilby Road in southwest Fort Collins, the facility is a product of the partnership between SummitStone Health Partners and Larimer County to address the need for more mental health resources and treatment options in Northern Colorado. The facility is funded by a 20-year county ballot initiative that utilizes some of Larimer County’s sales-and-use tax to provide behavioral health services.

The Acute Care facility, now open 24/7, is what Longview staff call a “behavioral health urgent care,” offering crisis stabilization and withdrawal management for individuals who need immediate help. It has an onsite pharmacy and lab, eight exam rooms and dozens of beds for short-term stays (there’s a five-day limit), plus a full staff of psychiatrists, nurses and other mental professionals to provide treatment and supervision during recovery.

For individuals experiencing a mental health crisis—anything from a panic attack to suicidal ideation—the crisis stabilization unit (CSU) offers individual and group therapy, medication administration, psychiatric evaluation, meals and personal services (clothing, laundry, etc.). During discharge, individuals are connected with resources for ongoing care.

Those experiencing alcohol or drug withdrawal are closely monitored in a separate unit and are given medical care to manage symptoms. Medication-assisted treatment and group and individual therapy are provided as well as meals, case management and care coordination services to help individuals receive ongoing assistance after they are discharged.
