Global Village Museum Presents Didgeridoo History and Music

Didgeridoo History and Music at Global Village Museum

The Australian Didgeridoo: One Awesome Instrument will be presented from 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures. Doug Powell, a didgeridoo player and maker, will survey the history and use of the instrument among the Aboriginal people. The Fort Collins
resident will also perform for the audience.

“I play in a contemporary, western style,” Powell says, “and I have studied with some amazing didgeridoo players. I discovered a passion for the didgeridoo in 1997, and I have been playing and making the instrument ever since.”

Powell’s presentation will cover traditional versus modern construction methods and materials, the contrast between traditional and western playing, the varying sounds of the instrument and didgeridoo breathing techniques. He will also bring his didgeridoo collection for audience members to try out.

Admission to the program is $5 per person, and refreshments will be served. Advanced reservations are required at globalvillagemuseum.org. The presentation is in conjunction with Australia and New Zealand: Miles Apart in the Museum’s Main Gallery. The exhibition, which runs through Nov. 18, explores the rich cultures, histories and arts of the two countries.

The Global Village Museum is located at 200 W. Mountain Ave., and museum hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Regular admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, $1 for kids ages 4-15 and free for children ages 3 and under. Adult tours receive discounted admission of $3 per person.
