Banner Health Announces Schedule for Safe Sitter Program

Students learn first aid, childcare & safety skills

Banner Health recently announced the summer schedule for their “Safe Sitter” program, an educational experience designed to prepare students to stay safe when they are home alone or babysitting. Geared towards 11- to 13-year-olds, the program teaches several critical life skills including first aid, childcare, safety and more. Classes are available in Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Milliken and Windsor.

The cost is $48 to register, and each session occurs from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the date indicated (schedule and locations below). To maintain social distancing, class sizes may be limited. Students should expect to wear a mask during the class and temperatures may be taken upon arrival.

In this course, students learn critical life skills including:

· How to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies

· A system to help assess and respond to injuries and illness

· Tips to manage behavior to stay in control of themselves and the children in their care

· The ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering

“Many students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade watch younger siblings, babysit, or start staying home by themselves,” Roxane Conant, MPH, said, Banner wellness senior manager. “The Safe Sitter program is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises to give students hands-on experience with situations they may deal with. They even get to use mannequins to practice rescue skills like CPR and choking rescue.”
