Real estate veteran Melissa Doherty, of Colorado Luxury Homes powered by C3 Real Estate Solutions, and Ed Rust, owner of Lifestyle Custom Homes, have been working together as a Realtor/Builder “dynamic duo” since the year 2000.

Most recently, the two completed a custom home at Tournament Players Club (“TPC”) Colorado Heron Lakes Community at 2774 Southwind Road, Berthoud. Homeowners Paul and Amy Hummel have known Doherty and Rust for several years, and Rust built their previous custom house. When the Hummels and Doherty happened to see each other at Henry’s Pub in Loveland a few years ago, the Hummels began discussing TPC Colorado and their desire to be one of the first homes in the Heron Lakes subdivision.

The vision that the Hummels had fit perfectly with Doherty’s love of helping clients achieve their big goals. Together, they jumped on the opportunity and took many four-wheel-drive Jeep trips to see the lay of the land before this beautiful location had a functional golf course, streets, curbs or gutters. They all fell in love with Heron Lakes at TPC Colorado, and Doherty set about making sure the Hummels’ dream would come true. She sent letters of intent to the developer and his real estate team and, after several rounds of communication, they were able to get a solid contract in place for the parcel of land.

“I am so happy to say that it was worth the effort on all of our parts to pursue something like this,” Doherty says. “Once we had the lot secured, then it was time for the real work to begin and Amy met with architect Kris Lee to share her vision with him.”

After a few months of working on architecture, the home was ready for Lifestyle Custom Homes to begin the custom home building experience. He built the Hummels’ previous custom home, so they were already comfortable with his extensive building knowledge and style.

“When we decided to build a new home, we did not even consider anyone else but Ed Rust. Since he was our builder on our last residence, we knew the quality and experience he would bring to our project. He listens to his homeowners and truly puts his heart into his work,” says Amy Hummel.

Doherty echoes her remarks by stating, “One really amazing part of working with Ed is his ability to change or modify the floorplans and personalize the details, such as the custom wood ceiling detail in the Hummels’ home or the custom bunk beds that he built by hand. He always puts a personal touch in each of his custom homes. He still loves to wear his nail bags, and he really enjoys his work. You can see his mark on everything he has built.”

Rust was excited to work on this Colorado Craftsman style home that is just under 6,000 square feet, with an unfinished basement that includes an area for a future golf simulator room. The home also has a four-car garage, and the entire house is designed for entertaining as well as enjoying daily life in luxurious style.

“We have a very fun, unique room that has eight built-in bunk beds that Ed helped create and build. Ed is not afraid to put his tool belt on; he’s very open to new and different types of ideas,” Amy Hummel says.

“Another feature we love in this new home is our floating staircase,” Paul Hummel adds. “This adds a very contemporary touch, as does the huge chandelier that hangs from the top of the house to the basement.”

This patio is a golfers dream with two fire features, gorgeous wood ceiling detail and a bifold pass-through window into the kitchen.

Rust explains: “The home’s open metal and timber stairway with its three-story chandelier is a total showstopper! Amy’s talent in selecting textures and finishes is truly the star of this home. Her taste is on full display and pushes it over the top!”

A main focus of the Hummel residence is outdoor living. “The covered entry porch has its own sitting area with a custom firepit for enjoying the incredible Colorado sunsets, while the back covered patio with its two fire features is perfect for year-round entertaining,” says Rust. “Additionally, the kitchen and pantry are a chef’s dream, and the dining area includes a 9-foot-wide accordion window that opens up to create a serving ledge to the back patio. There is a lot of glass throughout the entire home, offering an abundance of natural light as well as beautiful views.”

Together, the Hummels, Rust and Doherty were able to bring a unique and contemporary idea to life in beautiful fashion, with all parties eager to start from scratch and enter a new development, one that has quickly blossomed into a premiere Colorado location with coveted amenities such as lakes, clubhouse, golf course and Rocky Mountain ambiance.
